Bristol Backgammon

£5 Grand Prix (GP5)

The background

Inaugurated in 2013, this was a series of six knock-out events per year -- increasing in more recent years to nine events -- each with an entry fee of just £5.
This "budget" entry fee was an acknowledgment that, for some players (especially those new to competition), the "blanket" £10 entry fee hitherto charged for most Thursday events was not appropriate.
The events will form a grand prix similar to other Bristol Backgammon grand prix series already in existence, with similar rules, including two flights of knock-out with 7- and 5-point matches.
The series was discontinued in 2019, and superceded by the GP10 series, since £5 entry fee tournaments were deemed to have outlived their usefulness.
